Weatherwise, freezing cold - literally - but dry and bright. However, the warmth of the cheery atmosphere created by competitors and judges overcame that cold. Excellent courses as ever, with some exciting runs to watch at all levels!!

Just a reminder - there will be measuring at NAWS show at Harrogate on 30 October. Those not entered in the show who wish to attend need to contact me first for details of when to arrive. Books (£1.50) will be available, but you need to bring your dog's KC name and number with you, and a photo (in case the microchip is elusive) and £4 for the measuring. :o)

Things are really hotting up at the top of every class - and in the bid for the overall Champion of Champions title! It will be down to the wire at the next, final show of the series. The whole Leaderboard positions can been seen by clicking on the links ta the right, but a summary of the current position shows the following dogs and handlers as the Class leaders:

KC measuring at NAWS in February and March!!! Sue and I will be measuring - really for dogs/handlers already at the show because of the parking limits, and we are not sure exactly where and when, but it will all be sorted by 27 Feb.
I have books, but you will need your dog's KC name and number, and a photo (even if the dog is chipped, just in case we can't find the chip) Tattoo registration forms too if your dog is tattooed. Cost is £4 per measure, and £1.50 per book.Any questions, just ask!

An Important Reminder

Like other shows (eg KC, UKA), NAWS does not have transferable entries. What this means is, if you are unable to attend a show, it is NOT permissible to sell your entry (or even give it) to someone else and their dog(s).
I am sorry to have to write this post - it really should not be necessary, but sadly it is.

Points League updated for November

Well, despite minus 10 degrees when the show opened at 7.30am, and sudden enormous amounts of snow when the show closed at 3.45pm, this was a definite success, with people arriving from all over (there was about a 10% dip in numbers because of the weather) to contest some challenging, flowing, fun courses by our judges: Pam Brooker, Michelle Ainsworth, June Burrows and Steve Mellor. Many thanks to them and to everyone who was there for pitching in to help, and for the trememdous atmosphere generated - in spite of the cold.
So, points are in (see right for links) and the Leaders are as follows:
Class A: still storming away with her baby dog is Christine Brown and Meg on 40 points; in second place is Jenna Allinson and Malaika with 24 points.
Class B large: Kevin Dixon with weimaraner Millie lead on 28 points; in second place are Janine Parkinson and Echo on 21 points.
Class B small/medium: Jennifer Townsend and Millie on 31 points are just a hair's breadth ahead of Sue Foster and Zak on 30 points. This is going to be one to watch!
Class C large: Maureen Reynolds and Bryn maintain their lead on 24 points; in scond place is Emma Duckworth and Eric on 18 points.
Class C small/medium: Ally Yeomans and Minnie lead this class on 37 points, with Julie Kerry and Katy close behind on 30 points.
Class D large: A family derby in this class! Another one to watch! In the lead is Chris Nero and Gem on 28 points, with wife Janet Nero and Echo in second place on 19 points. (But we all know that work commitments mean that Chris can't get to some shows so.......)
Class D small/medium: Who else would lead here? Eileen Ainsworth and the evergreen Daisy (happy 10th birthday Daisy) are in front on 28 points, with Howard Weston and Poppy, and Carol Jewell and Gilbert in joint second place on 19 points.
Veterans: another class that is being closely contested! John Patterson leads with Jenny on 21 points, with Howard Weston and Luci just behind on 20 points.

So, 2 out of the 5 shows completed - what will the other 3 bring after Christmas!

Weather Warning

The met office for the show this weekend is very cold, but no snow - well, maybe a slight shower. So icy roads seem to be the main concern. Wrap up warm, and take great care as always in winter.
If there is any reason to cancel, it will be posted here on the evening before the show - whichever show, not just this one. We will also attempt to contact everyone, and post on the Agility Addicts and AgilityBits Forum sites. So, no news is good news!!

Whitehall Dog Rescue

Whitehall Dog Rescue was set up by Brian Wheelhouse in 1992 after finding out that stray and unwanted dogs collected by dog wardens or handed in to the police were taken to private kennels who had the contracts with police and dog wardens. The dogs were put on hold for 7 days and if a new owner could not be found in this time, the dogs were put to sleep.
Brian ran a motorcycle and car sales business in Leeds and decided to try and help the plight of these poor unwanted dogs, so he converted part of his showroom and built in kennels to accommodate his new guests. In 1994 the decision was made to close the car sales business as the dog rescue was taking 99% of the time. So Brian relocated to a farm in East Ardsley in Wakefield (nr Leeds) where he continues to rescue dogs from death row.

Whitehall Dog Rescue welcomes potential adoptees from any part of country and indeed has rehomed abroad. Homes for all the dogs are fully vetted. All the dogs are neutered whether male or female, also fully vaccinated and micro-chipped and of course they have had de-flea treatment & wormers.

The October NAWS show entries closed a week ago on 1st October, as per schedule.
The limit number for November has now been reached, so this show is now closed also. Entries received by Monday 11 October will still be accepted.
The later shows - January, February and March - have each about 10 places left, so early entry for these shows is advised if you are hoping to attend.
Please remember that there is NO DECEMBER SHOW this year, regardless of what it might say on any other web-sites.

Well, the schedule has been updated. We are just trying to get a few more judges, especially those happy to judge the higher Grades (3 to 7) so if you or anyone you know might be interested and who hasn't been invited yet, please get back to me asap.

NAWS 2010 to 2011

The dates for the next winter series are (all Sundays); 31 October 2010, 28 November 2010, 30 January 2011, 27 February 2011, 27 March 2011. The schedule should be out sometime in August.
We are currently putting together the list of judges for the show, so if you would be interested in being on the list please let me know (yettontop (at) ntlworld.com) - experienced judges would be especially welcome. The perks for half a day's judging are: free entry for all your dogs on the half of the day when you are not judging; breakfast and lunch; preferential parking; a bottle of wine to help you relax later (or equivalent if you would prefer something teetotal)

Well, the sun shone on the final show of the 2009 to 2010 season of Northern Agility Winter Shows - but not half as brightly as the smiles on so many faces throughout the day!
Thank you to: all our judges over the past six months, who have set some excellent and varied courses at all levels; all the helpers on all the rings, without whom the shows could not run; the competitors for being such good sports, never needing to be nagged about anything, supportive of each other's efforts; the caterers for keeping us all fed and watered; the venue owners for allowing us to use such a good indoor venue; and of course, the back room boys and girls who keep the shows running, fill in the score sheets, get out the prizes, announce the classes, empty the poo sacks (!) and all the other jobs that make the show happen. You have all been marvellous.

Collecting for Many Tears

As you all know (you've been buying the raffle tickets!) our charity this year is Many Tears Animal Rescue. You may also be aware that one of our judges, Natalie Mitchell, has moved to work at their centre in Wales, and has offered to take to the centre anything that we can collect that might help them.
For example:
bedding, blankets, duvets etc
dog leads and collars
feeding bowls of all sizes
dog coats, big or small
heat lamp bulbs.
indistructible toys
Zoflora antibactirial disinfectant
board markers and pens
So, if you can help in any way at all, bring your stuff to the January and February shows, and we will pass it on to Natalie to take down.
Even the smallest items can be a help, and will be appreciated!

Well, everyone seems to have got home okay, despite being re-routed because of the snow, or even having to do an extra, involuntary, walk on the way home. Such a relief!
Well done to all the hardy supporters of this show, and to the judges and helpers. Your efforts were really appreciated!!
For those owed rosettes, they will be brought to the next show, but if you are not at that one, we hope to be at Wilmslow next month so they can be picked up from there. Please contact yettontop @ ntlworld.com if you won't be at the next show so we can arrange to get your rosette to you.
Mike is busy typing up the placings ready to go on to the League Points sheets (though yet another rescue in the household may delay things just a little!)

At the moment the weather forecast for this Sunday is beautiful - cold but sunny - a lovely winter day.
BUT the forecast for Saturday varies from rain showers to sleet to snow, depending upon which weather website you look at - Lol!!
So, some ideas:
1. Watch the forecasts and make up your own mind about the journey. None of us lives near the Riding Centre, so we will be relying on the venue owners to inform us if there are any difficulties at their end;
2. Be aware that the temperatures overnight might cause black ice on the roads, and that the road from Brackenthwaite Lane to the venue might not be gritted;
3. Bring some wheelchocks to put behind your tyres for when parked in the carpark area, just in case it gets a bit icy;
4. Check this Blog for further information nearer the time.

Didn't it rain!!! Pouring down almost all day!! But it didn't dampen our spirits indoors, and , thanks to our judges and their splendid courses, we had loads of clear rounds and excellent results. I promised the cafe people that I would let everyone know that they now serve cereals as well as bacon/egg/sausage butties at breakfast time, and that they can now offer home-made lasagne (vegetable version as well as a meat one) and shepherds pie at lunchtimes as well as burgers, jacket potatoes with fillings, fruit and soups. Hot drinks are available at all times. So plan accordingly!! (I had the shepeherds pie last time and was very impressed!)

Last year we raised over £300 during the 5 shows for Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue and, with your help, we hope to do as well in this year's series of 6 shows.

It's about this time of year that we start to get enquiries about entries for the shows - people wanting to change classes, withdraw from shows, check details etc. Please could I remind everyone that Jan is the only person who can answer these enquiries as she alone deals with all the entries. She now has a dedicated phone number for enquiries: Tel:0 7 8 3 7 4 0 1 3 5 8 on which you can call her or text her. Her e-mail account is bouncing, so please don't try to contact her that way - she is working on getting it fixed, but it's proving a nuisance!
The data for all the shows is almost complete, and will be available on-line as soon as Mike transfers it from Jan's computer to the on-line programme (he's the tecky one of the 3 of us!!) I'll let you know when this is available.

The Delinquent Dogz stall selling bedding, leads, collars, toys etc will be at the shows this year - Michelle will be happy to provide particualar items if you get in touch with her beforehand.
SunnySide Photographers will be at the October show - you will remember from last year that they produced really excellent action pictures at very reasonable prices.

The schedule is out on Agility Addicts and AgilityNet websites, or can be obtained by emailing yetton top @ ntlworld . com (omit all spaces) direct. Maximum 130 dogs per show, so we anticipate that entries will close early for all shows.
Please make sure that you put enough postage on your entry envelopes - after last year we are going to charge £5 for all entries that have to be collected from the post office because of insufficient postage. Please also enclose a SAE or stamped postcard if you want us to confirm that the entry has been successful - any unsuccessful entries will be returned to senders.

Down to the Wire...February Leader Board

Well, the results for February are all on the Leader board now after today's penultimate show of the season, and it's tight at the top!!

Class A sees Julie Rumsey and Gertie in the lead on 58 points; Class B Large has Leah Rumsey and Ernie on 66 points; while Class B Small & Medium has Julie Rumsey again, this time with Charlie, on 66 points also - so definitely a family battle going on here! Class C Large has Eileen Ainsworth and Chase still in the lead (just!) on 49 points; Class C Small & Medium has Bev Smith and Lara on52 points. Class D large has Chris Nero and gem on 42 points; Class D Small & Medium has Eileen Ainsworth and Daisy on 76 points - the leading dog for the Rehomed Dog Trophy too. The veterans Class is being led, by 1 point, by Erica Hetherington and Pip on 31 points.

So, some close calls in the chase for the title of Champion of Champion - and in every class it is still possible for the leadership to change at the final show of the series, and a different Class Champion emerge!

It's going to be an exciting end to the series!!

On another note - the charity fund raising has gone really well, better than we ever expected, thanks to the efforts of Jenny Rothwell who has persuaded everyone to give generously at each show. We had hoped to raise about £200 for Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue, but thanks to your generosity, we are now hoping to make it nearer to £350!! This will be greatly appreciated, I know, by all the helpers and dogs at the Rescue Kennels at Crag Vale near hebden Bridge. What makes it even more special is that a couple of our regular competitors are dogs from this Rescue Kennels.

NAWS in January

The next NAWS Show will be held on Sunday 25 January at the Harrogate Riding and Language Centre. I keep meaning to remind people that there is a motel on site (book with the Riding Centre at their website - http://www.springhousegroup.com/index.htm - but dogs are not allowed in the rooms as it has just been newly refurbished.
The judges at the next show are Pam Brooker, Anna Wright, Tony Park and Natalie Mitchell. Details of numbers etc will be posted here in due course.
By the way, ALL the shows have been full for some time now, but I can't seem to get the show schedule web sites to show them as full. Sorry about that.

Wasn't it cold!! But dry and even sunny outside at times, and warm enough in the cafe.
Many thanks to everyone who helped to make it such an easy show to run, and to everyone who bought raffle tickets for Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue - we put £100 into the pot yesterday between us! From the M62: Leave the M62 at Junction 27, M621 towards Leeds. At Junction 2 take the A643 exit to Wetherby A58/Harrogate A61/ York A64. At the roundabout take the first exit onto A643. Approaching the next roundabout take the middle lane, then follow the road round to the third exit onto the Inner Ring Road signed WetherbyA58/ Harrogate A61/ York A64. After the tunnels take the slip road signed Wetherby/YorkA64. Stay left through traffic lights to pick up the A61 Harrogate Road (be aware of speed cameras on this road) Continue to follow the A61 out of Leeds, past Harewood House, towards Harrogate. At the next roundabout after Harewood House, go towards Harrogate then turn first left towards Burn Bridge. (Burn Bridge Lane). About half a mile up this road there is a give way sign: turn left here into Brackenthwaite Lane. After quite a long way you will come to a sharp right hand bend – turn left immediately after this signed Spring House Farm. At the T-junction turn left. At the Y-junction turn right. The venue is at the top of the lane.

Photographer at the October Show

I'm delighted to say that Sunnyside Photographers are attending our show in October, hoping to get action shots in the arena, but also available to take portrait shots outside if the weather is good.
The feedback from other shows where they have been in attendance has been very good, so bring some pennies with you and buy that picture of your agility dog in action!

January and March Shows are Full

The January and March Shows are now full, and there is enough room left at the other shows for about 15 dogs.
The closing date for the October show is next Saturday - 4 October. I will be at Lune Valley Show next Saturday so can take entries there if there are any.

Venue Update

Well, I've just spent a very pleasant hour or so touring our new venue at Harrogate, checking ring sizes and car parking area. There has been a lot of building going on since I was last there, and, although the paint work might not have been done when we go for the first Show on 26 October, the facilities will be good.
The car park is considerably larger than before, and we also have the field next to the car park for 4X4s - don't worry, it is well drained and stays dry, I'm told. The exercise area can't match Middleton Park, but we will have the use of the paddock at the back of the arena.
The entrance to the arena is straight off the car park, which will help to keep the classes running smoothly, and there is also a new gallery overlooking the arena for spectators, as well as a room for people to sit and chat in, and where we may be doing the presentations.
Next to the arena, and straight off the car park, is the Reception Room where running orders will be distributed at the start of the day, and where admin will be based. The cafe is next to the Reception Room, and will be serving bacon butties, burgers, hot dogs, jacket potatoes, some sandwiches and a variety of drinks throughout the day. Toilets are indoors at the back of the cafe.
As well as trying to get the painting of the rooms done before our arrival, there are another couple of things still outstanding. They are going to tarmac the track from the road to the venue tomorrow, and the new floor, similar to the one at Middleton Park and at Myerscough, is due to go down on 8 September - they were still digging out the base and whitewashing the arena walls while I was there today.
So, it all looks very exciting! I understand that the Shows are filling up steadily, with those people who were away on holiday now managing to get their entries in. Even with the extra 50 places this year, please don't leave it too late with your entries - we really hate having to return failed entries! And please check your postage before sending your entry off - there are a few people who will have to open their purses and wallets when they arrive as we have had to pay extra postage for them.
More news will appear on here as soon as we have any.

The schedules start to go out today. If you would like one, and you haven't already sent me your e-mail address, please do so and I will send you a schedule and entry form.

I'm sorry, but we don't send out paper copies at all, only e-mail ones.

We have a new venue, near to Harrogate, with a bit more parking and a proper cafeteria. We have managed to increase the number of dogs we can cope with to 150, so more people should be successful in getting their entry this year. Just to be on the safe side, could you enclose a SAE with your entry so that we can confirm that it has been received and accepted?

The Final Countdown

And so we come to the last show of this season. Jan, Mike and Brenda would like to thank everyone who has helped to make the shows enjoyable - judges, scribes, timekeepers, helpers, caterers, admin, and everyone who has been involved in any way. Make sure you let Jean have your e-mail address if you want a schedule for next season - due out sometime in the summer months.
The order of classes and the judges for our final show are: Morning - C&D Agility with Maureen Reynolds, and B&A Jumping with Steve Booty; Afternoon - B&A Agility with Anna Wright and C&D Jumping with Pam Brooker. Presentations will be at the end of the day, together with the crowning of the Class Champions and the Champion of Champions!

Withdrawing Dogs

We appreciate that there are a lot of reasons why handlers might withdraw dogs from a show - and the clash of shows at Easter is only one of them.
However, please do not make private transfers of entries - this is not permissible at any other shows and ours are no different. We have let some people 'get away with it' in the past so as not to disappoint them after a long journey, but we will not be doing so in future.
We would like to be informed if you know that you cannot attend a show - it might just mean that someone on our own waiting list might be allowed to enter instead. (Contact yettontop at ntlworld dot com)

So, the Leader Board for the penultimate show of the series. Who will win the Championship titles at the next and last show? In all Classes except one, it is still possible for the current leader to be equalled or overtaken, so the next show should have some exciting results! In the event of a tie, the best result from the March show will be the deciding factor - yes, this does benefit the people who will be competing with us in March rather than elsewhere.

Well, the results from the October show have been entered onto the computer and totalled, and here they are:
Class A (for dogs over 15 months that have not yet competed elsewhere)
In the lead is a Large dog, Sarah Monks’ Molly on 12 points, but only just behind, on 9 points is arguably the smallest dog in the whole competition, Sharon Sampson’s Spritzer.
Class B (for dogs competing in Grades 1 & 2 or equivalent):
Large – in the lead is Melanie Freeston and Spike on 10 points, with Graham Duckworth and Becca only 1 point behind.
Medium & Small – Erica Hetherington’s Pip is leading this class on 11 points, with Alice Dean and Sammy their closets rival on 6 points.
Class C (for dogs competing in Grades 3 & 4 or equivalent):
Large – Karen Cornwall leads this group with Abby on 10 points, with Janice Dawson and Bud in second place on 7 points.
Small & Medium – On 11 points we have Sue Jones and Heidi in the lead, with her other dog Peter in second place on 7 points
Class D (for dogs competing in grades 5,6 & 7 or equivalent):

But anything can happen in the next 4 shows, and the lead may change a number of times before the final Class and Series Champions are announced at the March show on Easter Sunday.

Courtesy of Jackie Gardner and Brenda Tenten, there will be measuring at all the NAWS shows this winter, times to be arranged on the day.
People not entered at the show are welcome to come for measuring at about lunchtime, and park outside or at the Sports Arena please as we have no spare parking at the venue. Please book in with the Secretary when you arrive.
